How to Cane a Chair in 4 Easy Steps...

When I promised Jacquie and Dan that I would re-cane 2 chairs that were part of the bedroom set they are taking with them to Utah...I thought that it should be an easy job. Well, in reality, it was a relatively easy job. The stressful part was getting everything ready for the job. Here is one of the chairs before I started...

First I borrowed some how-to books from the library. Then I ordered the pre-woven cane and spline online. Then I removed the old cane from the seat...THAT was the hardest job!

After I soaked the caning in hot water to soften it up, I used these wedges to position the cane on the seat...

Then I carefully trimmed the cane...and ran a thick glob of wood glue around the edge and pressed the spline into place....

The finished product!
